Many brothers and sisters, when reading in the Bible that the Lord’s coming again will be like lightning that comes from the east and is visible even in the west, think that the second coming of the Lord Jesus must be accompanied by a great light like lightning, which will flash from the east of the world to the west of the world and make the whole sky dazzlingly brilliant. And they also take this as the proof of the Lord’s coming in the end time. Then will the prophecy spoken by the Lord Jesus that “as the lightning comes out of the east, and shines even to the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be” really be fulfilled as people have imagined? Is the “lightning” really a great light which people can see with their physical eyes? The Scripture says, “The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, on them has the light shined.” (Isaiah 9:2) It prophesied what the situation would be like when the Messiah came and that the Lord was the light. Thus it can be seen that the light God spoke of is not a great light that our physical eyes can see. The Lord Jesus once said, “I am the light of the world: he that follows me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” (John 8:12) From this verse we can know more assuredly that the Lord is the light. When the Age of the Law passed and the Age of the Grace came, those who followed the pace of the Holy Spirit’s working and obeyed the Lord Jesus’ word were living in the light. Thus, if we say that the “lightning” that comes forth when the Son of man descends in the end time refers to a light that is visible to our physical eyes, isn’t this our notion?
Then, what exactly is the meaning of the “lightning” in the Lord’s prophecy that “the lightning comes out of the east, and shines even to the west”? Let’s look at what the Bible says, “And out of the throne proceeded lightning and thunder and voices….” (Revelation 4:5) “And he showed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb.” (Revelation 22:1) “And a voice came out of the throne, saying, Praise our God, all you his servants…. And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunder, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigns.” (Revelation 19:5-6) From these verses, we can see that the “lightning,” the “many waters,” and the “mighty thunder” all come from the throne, and they undoubtedly refer to the work that God will do and the word that he will speak in the end time. That is to say, in the end time, God will do a new work on earth, he will reign and rule on earth, and he will express his word that supplies man with life and will purify, transform, and perfect man with the word he expresses. The work God does and the word he speaks in the end time are the “light” that comes from the “lightning,” which will spread from the east to the west. That is, Almighty God will first speak his word and utter his voice and make a group of overcomers in the East (China), and then he will spread his word to the west through this group of overcomers, so that the whole world will receive his end-time salvation. Brothers and sisters, now, do we understand why we can’t see the “lightning”? The reason is that the “lightning” is not a great light visible to our physical eyes as we have imagined, but it refers to God’s end-time work and word. It can be said that if we don’t accept God’s end-time work, we will never have the blessing of seeing the “lightning” that God sends forth in the end time.
Actually, if Almighty God hadn’t uttered his voice and spoken to disclose mysteries, we would never have understood the real meaning of the prophecy that “the lightning comes out of the east, and shines even to the west.” Let’s read Almighty God’s revelation of this mystery. Almighty God says, “At the time when all men are giving their attention, when all things have been replaced and revived, and when all people are set on obeying God and are willing to receive God’s burden and shoulder the heavy responsibility, the eastern lightning will then come forth, shining from the east to the west, so that the whole earth is greatly startled because of the coming of this beam of light. At this time, God begins a new life again. That is to say, right at this time, God begins his new work on earth, and announces to people all over the universe: ‘When the lightning comes forth from the East, it is just the time I begin to utter my voice and speak. When the lightning flashes out, the entire universe is lit up, and all the stars are changed.’ Then, when is the time the lightning comes from the East? When it is dark all around, it is the time God hides his face and does not look at this world, and it is also the time a spell of violent storm will come upon the world. But right at this time, all people are in a state of panic and are smitten with fear, being afraid of the rumbling of the thunder, being afraid of the shining of the lightning, and being more afraid of the hitting of the rainstorms, so much so that most people close their eyes waiting for the time when God gets angry and strikes them down. With all kinds of situations occurring, the eastern lightning comes forth. That is, in the East of the world, from the time God Godself begins to be testified, to the time he begins to do the work, and to the time his divinity begins to reign on the whole earth, it is that the beam of the eastern lightning lights up across the whole universe. When the kingdom of the world becomes the kingdom of Christ, it will be the time the whole universe is lit up. Now it is the time the eastern lightning comes forth; the incarnated God begins to work, and moreover, he directly speaks in divinity. It can be said that when God begins to speak and utter his voice on earth, it is the time the eastern lightning comes forth. To put it exactly, when the living water flows from the throne, that is, when the utterance from the throne begins, it is the time ‘the speaking of the seven spirits’ formally begins. At this time, the eastern lightning begins to come forth. Due to the difference in duration, the degree of the illumination differs, and the range of the illumination is limited. However, as God’s work moves on, and as his plan changes, that is, the work done on the sons and the people differs, the lightning will perform its original function more and more. Consequently, the whole universe will be lit up, leaving not the slightest dregs or leftover evils existing. This is exactly the crystallization of God’s six-thousand-year management plan. What God enjoys is just this fruit.” “I am doing my work in the entire universe, and in the East loud voices like the pealing of thunders issue forth unceasingly, shaking every denomination and sect. It is my utterance that has brought all people to today. I cause all people to be conquered because of my utterance, and all fall into this stream and become subject before me. For I have long taken back my glory from the whole earth and sent it forth from the East again. Who does not expect to see my glory? Who does not look forward to my returning? Who does not thirst for my reappearing? Who does not long for my loveliness? Who will not come to the light? Who will not see the riches of Canaan? Who does not expect the return of the ‘Redeemer’? Who does not look up to the Mighty One? My utterance will be proclaimed in the whole earth. I will utter my voice and speak more to my chosen people, which will shake mountains and rivers like mighty thunders. It is to the entire universe that I speak, and it is to mankind that I speak. So the word of my mouth will become people’s treasure, and all people will treasure my word. It is from the East that the lightning flashes even to the west. My word is inseparable to man, is unfathomable to man, and even more, is joyful to man. Like a newborn baby, all people will be happy and joyous, celebrating my coming. By my utterance, I will bring all people before me. Thereafter, I will formally enter among mankind, causing all people to come to worship me. By the sending forth of my glory and by the word of my mouth, I will cause all people to come before me and see that it is from the East that the lightning comes, that I have descended on the ‘Mount of Olives’ of the East and have long come to earth, and I am no longer the ‘Son of the Jews’ but the Lightning of the East, because I have long resurrected and left from among people and again have appeared among people with glory, and that I am the One worshiped by people before the ages and the ‘baby’ rejected by the Israelites before the ages and even more the Almighty God of the present age who is laden with glory!” (from The Word Appears in the Flesh) From Almighty God’s words, we can see that God’s end-time work and word are the lightning that comes from the east. The “lightning” refers to the way by which God judges man in the last days, that is, the word by which God chastises and judges man. (cf. John 12: 48; Revelation 1:16) God’s word is like lightning, which shows that it’s extremely quick. When God’s word issues forth, it shakes every sect and circle and shakes the heart of everyone who thirsts after God’s appearing. Within more than twenty years, it has spread throughout the whole Mainland China and is spreading to all the other countries in the world. The lightning of the east (that is, God’s end-time work of judgment in China and God’s word), though accompanied with thunders, as if carrying wrath, brings light and the living water of life to mankind, so that mankind’s thirsty spirit is nourished and people know God’s real image and have true fear and worship of God. All those who have accepted the lightning of the east, that is, God’s end-time work, can testify for this.
Through the above fellowship, we should have understood that the literal meaning of the prophecy doesn’t match the fulfilled fact of the prophecy at all. If we stick to the letters of the prophecy in the Bible and live in our imaginations, won’t we miss God’s salvation? Dear brothers and sisters, do you want to see the “lightning that comes from the east”? Do you want to hear the “voices of the seven thunders” prophesied in Revelation? Do you want to hear the roar of the “many waters” flowing from the throne? Do you want to be watered by “the river of the water of life”? When you accept Almighty God’s work, you will see and hear and gain all these.
